Audio Restoration
Optional. Available on request.
Most 1/2 inch two track reels transfer well without any restoration work. Abnormal tape hiss or electrical hum can be addressed when present. However, many masters and live board mixes carry ambient or console noise that is part of the original recording, aggressive noise reduction on these can make the audio sound worse, not better. We will always tell you honestly whether restoration will help your tape before proceeding.
✓ Not always beneficial on live or home masters
✓ No separate quote in your inbox? That means restoration wasn't necessary or achievable on your recording, not that we skipped your request.
TAPE TRANSFER SERVICES

1/2 Inch 2 Track Stereo Reel Transfer

Half inch reel to reel tape transfer done right. We convert 1/2 inch two track reels to digital in real time on a fully calibrated Studer A820, delivering clear, accurate WAV files. You receive your audio via cloud download, USB drive, or CD and every transfer is handled in house, monitored throughout, and never outsourced.

1/2 inch reel to reel transfer and digitization is one of the most mishandled services online. Many companies run your master through whatever deck they happen to own, regardless of whether it was ever built for mastering accuracy. Others outsource the work entirely, sending your irreplaceable masters to overseas facilities or untrained operators.

We take a different approach. Half inch two track masters were originally cut on machines like the Studer A80/A820, the Ampex ATR-100 series, and the MCI JH-110, the industry standard decks of the format. Every transfer we perform is done in house on our fully restored, professionally calibrated Studer A820.

A properly restored mastering deck recovers more detail, more stereo imaging, and more of your original mix. If you want to digitize a half inch reel properly, the playback machine is everything.

Every transfer is monitored in real time to ensure accuracy, consistency, and archival quality results.

The Difference

1/2 Inch 2 Track Stereo Reel Transfer & Digitization

Why It Demands Expertise

Professional 1/2 inch 2 track stereo reel to reel tape transfer service on a Studer A820 - Audio Conservation

1/2 inch reel to reel transfer sounds simple. Drop a reel on, press play, done. That is exactly what most services do and exactly why most transfers disappoint. The quality of your final audio files are determined by two things: the condition of the playback deck and it’s tape heads and the quality of the original master.

Half inch two track was the standard studio mastering and mixdown format from the 1970s through the 1990s, which means the reel in your hands is very likely the only copy of a finished master, a live board mix, or a mixdown that predates any digital backup.

A properly restored, professional grade deck captures everything on your reel accurately and completely. What we guarantee is that nothing is lost in the transfer, every bit of signal on your reel comes through on a fully restored Studer A820.

Audio Conservation helped preserve priceless recordings of my grandfather from fragile lacquer discs. Sean was knowledgeable, professional, and communicative throughout the process. The recovered recordings exceeded my expectations and preserved an important piece of my family's history. Highly recommended for anyone looking to preserve irreplaceable audio recordings.

In 1948 my grandfather had a gospel quartet that included my mother and father. They recorded some records in an AM radio station in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. They were never stored properly, probably were subjected to extreme heat and cold at times, badly scratched, vinyl falling off in places and 78 years old. I found Audio Conservation with an online search and sent one to them to see if they could do anything with it. THE RESULT WAS AMAZING! They digitally downloaded the recording as it was and then as it was cleaned. I had little hope that they could do anything with it. Just the opposite! With it on lacquer vinyl and recorded at a radio station, I doubt it sounded much better when first recorded! It is clear and I can hear the distinct voices of my parents and grandfather as they sing. Thanks to Audio Conservation for the work they did. I have more records that I will send. If you have a damaged recording or want something to be digitized, this is the place! The results exceeded my expectations by miles and miles. And, on the cost side, the price was very, very reasonable. If you need them, use them. You'll be glad you did.

Have nothing but positive remarks about what Sean was able to do with an 80 year old record I recently sent to him that was severely delaminated. I can certainly understand why Audio Conservation has all the five star reviews they have and I have now left my five star review as well. I am convinced if Sean can't restore the audio file(s) from the very old records and tapes you might send in, nobody in the entire country can ! Thanks Sean !

I recently sent Audio Conservation a Teac Tascam 4 track cassette tape from 1985. I thought the thing would be toast at this point, but Sean worked his magic and transferred it to a high quality digital (wav) format. The transaction was effortless, and worth every penny. I spoke to Sean twice before sending it along, asking him questions about procedures, process, and equipment, and he was incredibly personable, patient, and knowledgeable. I couldn't be happier to have this composition resurrected after 41 years. Thank you Sean and Conservation Audio!!! You rock!

I sent Audio Conservation a number of cassette tapes containing interviews about family history with long deceased relatives. Sean did a great job with the cassettes, and the digital files are very clear. Turnaround time was super fast and communication was perfect throughout - thanks!

I had some trouble getting my recording to its destination because the Post Office didn't recognize the address and truncated it. I was blessed to have the Post Office return it. I then sent it a second time to the advertised address, this time insisting that the one I provided be used. It made it that time. Sean at Audio Conservation provided personal care with my old WWII Record-O-Graph lacquer disk. His digitizing of the recording was flawless. His service was off-the-charts. This service was a God-Send. To hear the voice of my Uncle from the 1940s during his Army service in the Philippines was inexpressible. I was able to share it with his brother and son. This is the place to go for a professional result. It was worth every penny!

Incredible service and quality! In cleaning out my parents' home/estate, found two homemade old records of my father as a child. They were in VERY poor shape (husband and I thought they were goners) but we sent them off. Audio Conservation did amazing and fast work in restoring and sending me the digital files. I cried hearing my father's voice from the past! So impressed with the service provided, highly recommend Audio Conservation to preserve your memories. Don't hesitate.

I’ve worked with a number of audio conservation studios over the years, but this one genuinely stands apart. What struck me most wasn’t just their technical skill (which is excellent), but the level of care and intention behind everything they do. From the start, it felt personal. There’s a clear respect for the history embedded in each recording, and that respect shows up in the smallest details of their process. In an industry where it’s easy to be swayed by marketing buzz this studio actually lives up to its commitment to "audio conservation". My exchanges with Sean never felt rushed or transactional. There’s a lot of thought and care in how he and the team handle everything, and that shows in both the process and the final result. If you’re looking for a studio that treats your audio not just as a project, but as something worth preserving with integrity and purpose, this is it.

Audio Conservation retrieved the recorded messages from a 1944 Philco record that none of us had ever heard because we thought it was ruined. The recording was recovered and restored beautifully. Sean was a delight to work with. Understand this record was sent to my Dad in Europe during WWII. It was really incredible to hear family sending love and encouragement to my dad during the most traumatic events of his life. Only 1 person on that recording is still alive, my brother who was 2 at the time. You can trust Audio Conservation.
01
Full deck condition and calibration determine everything
On a 1/2 inch two track reel the two tracks run the full width of the tape with no guard band to hide misalignment, so azimuth matters, but it is only one part of what has to be right. Head wear, tape path, tension, and the condition of the playback electronics all shape what actually makes it into the file. A deck that looks fine on the outside but has drifted out of spec will quietly cost you high frequency detail and stereo imaging. In most cases the tape is fine, the deck is not.
02
Accurate speed across all four playback speeds
Half inch two track reels turn up at 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 ips depending on whether they came off a home deck or a mastering suite. Our deck is calibrated to run true at each of these speeds, so a reel recorded at any of them plays back at the correct pitch and tempo. Playback speed that drifts even slightly shifts pitch and timing audibly, especially at the higher professional speeds.
03
Every transfer is monitored in real time
Automated bulk transfer services run unattended. No one is listening. No one adjusts levels. No one notices when something goes wrong. Every 1/2 inch two track transfer we perform is monitored from start to finish by someone who knows what a good transfer sounds like.
04
Professional decks are irreplaceable, so we maintain and calibrate ours properly
Our deck has been rebuilt to spec, with every aging electronic component and IC in the audio path replaced and the full signal chain recalibrated. Azimuth and speed are set against newly manufactured Magnetic Reference Laboratory (MRL) calibration tapes, still made to the same reference standards the industry has used for decades, and verified on a fully restored Sound Technology 1510A, one of the finest audio measurement instruments ever built. Sourcing the right references, doing the rebuild correctly and knowing how to calibrate a deck to spec is a discipline unto itself and it is why your reel plays back the way it was meant to sound rather than however a neglected machine happens to render it.

Compatibility

Every Standard 1/2 Inch Reel Configuration Supported.

If your reel is a standard 1/2 inch stereo tape we can transfer it. Every configuration, speed, and equalization standard below is supported, and we handle all of them every day.

Half Track Stereo
Two tracks recorded across the full tape width, left and right, running in one direction. The standard professional mastering and mixdown configuration for 1/2 inch tape.
Full Track Mono
A single mono track recorded across the entire tape width. Common on older broadcast and mastering reels predating widespread stereo mixdown.
3.75 IPS
The slowest common speed for this format, typically found on longer home or archival reels where recording time mattered more than fidelity.
7.5 IPS
A common speed on home and semi-professional decks, offering a solid balance of fidelity and reel run time.
15 IPS
The standard professional mastering speed, offering excellent frequency response and signal to noise performance for stereo masters.
30 IPS
The highest fidelity speed used for 1/2 inch two track mastering, offering the widest bandwidth and lowest noise floor of any analog format.
NAB & CCIR Equalization
Both EQ standards are supported and switchable. Reels mastered to the American NAB curve or the European CCIR/IEC curve are played back with the correct equalization, not approximated after the fact.
Reels Up To 14 Inches
Every reel size up to 14 inches is accepted, on plastic or metal reels and any hub type. Large studio mastering reels that most decks cannot physically mount are handled without issue.
Studer · Ampex · MCI
Many half inch two track masters were cut on Studer, Ampex, or MCI decks, the machines that defined the format. We transfer every reel on a fully restored and professionally calibrated Studer A820, covering all four speeds above.
.degrade-grid{display:grid;grid-template-columns:1fr 1fr;gap:64px;align-items:center;} @media(max-width:767px){.degrade-grid{grid-template-columns:1fr;gap:32px;}}
Act Now

Your master is degrading today.

1/2 inch reels from the 1970's, 80's, and 90's are at or past their usable lifespan. The degradation is not one single problem, it is a combination of age related chemical and physical processes happening simultaneously, whether the reel is sitting in storage or being played.

Some of it can be arrested long enough to get a clean transfer. Some of it is permanent, and the only thing that stops it from getting worse is getting the audio off the tape. Either way, the recording is not going to improve by sitting in a closet another year.

We assess every reel before playback and repair what we can at no charge. Reels requiring low temperature baking or splice repair are prepared before playback. Reels requiring extensive work beyond normal preparation may be subject to an additional fee, we will always contact you with an assessment and cost before proceeding.

Sticky Shed Syndrome
The binder holding oxide to the tape absorbs moisture over decades and breaks down, causing squealing and shedding during playback. Most 1/2 inch reels from this era require low temperature baking before they can be safely transferred. The Library of Congress has studied this extensively as a leading preservation threat to magnetic tape.
Baking Buys Time, It Does Not Cure
Treating an affected reel takes a minimum of ten hours at low temperature, often closer to fourteen, and it opens a window of only a few weeks before the tape returns to its original condition. Baking is not a repair, it is a temporary stabilization that exists so the tape can be transferred while it is playable. Once that window closes the problem is back.
Oxide Shedding
Binder deterioration releases oxide particles onto the heads and guides during playback, causing dropouts and permanent signal loss. Playing a shedding reel without assessment removes recorded material that cannot be recovered.
Reel & Splice Failure
Plastic reels warp and crack. Hubs crack. Old splicing tape dries out and separates. A reel that cannot play cleanly through a transport cannot be safely transferred, physical condition must be assessed and repaired first.
Print-Through
On reels stored tightly wound for decades, the signal from one layer of tape imprints onto the layer beside it, producing a faint echo around loud passages. There is no way to remove it once it has happened. Storing a reel tails out helps by shifting the artifact to a less noticeable post-echo rather than a pre-echo, but the only real protection is proper storage and transferring the tape while the recording is still intact.

1/2 Inch 2 Track Reel Transfer — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the price per reel or per project?

The price is per reel, at any length. If you have multiple reels add the quantity to your cart.

You will receive a digital audio file for your reel delivered in uncompressed WAV format. You will also receive a scanned photo of your original reel box. Your original reel is returned with your order.

We typically complete transfers within 5 to 7 business days of receiving your tape. You will receive a tracking number when your return shipment is created.

Place your reel securely in a rigid box, ideally in its original box or a padded reel case. Do not ship loose in an envelope. Fill any empty space so the reel cannot move during transit. Contact us if you need packaging advice before shipping.

Ship your tape using whichever carrier you are most comfortable with. UPS, FedEx, USPS or any other carrier is fine. We do ask that you use a service that includes tracking. Our mailing address is included in your order confirmation. After shipping please monitor your tracking number. If 3 business days have passed from the date your tracking shows delivered and you have not received a confirmation email from us please contact us immediately.

Just your reel. Include a note with your name, order number and any relevant details about your recording.

Send it to us before attempting to play it yourself. Sticky shed and splice damage are repairable as part of the transfer process at no charge. Playing a damaged or squealing reel without assessment can permanently worsen the condition of the recording.

For commercially produced or clearly sequenced masters we can split your transfer into individual tracks on request. For home and personal recordings or music that was recorded without clear stops between songs, voice recordings, interviews, or live recordings we do not split tracks, as there is no reliable way to do this without making judgment calls about your material. For large orders of commercial reels, with a high track counts across many tapes, track splitting may be subject to an additional fee. We will always contact you with an assessment before any additional charges are applied.

We transfer 1/2 inch 2 track stereo reels at 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 ips, and support both NAB and CCIR equalization. Half track stereo and full track mono are both handled, on reels up to 14 inches.
